This is an interesting read about the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln before he took the oath of office. The books deals primarily with the efforts of Allan Pinkerton, along with others, to thwart the attempt and have Lincoln arrive safely in Washington, D.C.
The author does a very good job of laying out how easy it was for the plotters to plan and schedule an attempt as Lincoln’s train itinerary was published and the fact that he had limited protection due to his own beliefs. He establishes that there was a plot in Baltimore and that it very well might have been successful if the schedule had not been altered.
The book is well researched and the writing style makes it easy to understand and follow the various individual’s thoughts and actions.
The biggest challenge in reading this book was the layout of the book. The paper quality was poor in that the inserted photos were difficult to see and read. In addition, the page layout caused for crowded print that took a while to get used to. Those issues aside, it was a very good read.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in Abraham Lincoln or civil war history.
